Tamiflu, Oseltamivir, is a prescription medication that is FDA-approved for fighting the flu when you first start feeling influenza symptoms.

Tips on how to Avoid the Swine Flu

Clean those hands. Like any other flu, cleanliness and common sense can help to prevent you catching the swine flu.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, as these are the areas where the virus is most frequently spread, especially after having physical contact. Avoid shaking hands or hugging. If necessary then wash you hands as soon as decently possible. Wash your hands often as well. The flu is spread by both physical contact and through the air, so minimizing contact with sick people is a good defense. If you are sick stay home.

If you begin to have symptoms of the flu, contact your health care provider right away, especially if you live in, near or have visited an area that has had confirmed cases (see USA map). Tamiflu and Relenza are reportedly effective against the swine flu. If you are sick, stay at home so as not to spread the virus to others. Use several tissues when coughing or sneezing, and promptly dispose of the tissue to lidded bin and wash your hands.

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Lather up well! And, be sure to wash your hands for at least 30 seconds. Just a quick splash of soap and water is not enough! If you’re on the go, alcohol-based hand cleaners are also reportedly effective, according to the CDC. Again always make sure you clean your hands thoroughly.

About the Avian Flu Virus

• The current Asian outbreak of avian flu, also known as bird flu, is associated with the influenza A strain H5N1 flu virus. Although not the same as the Spanish flu virus that claimed 20 million to 50 million lives worldwide in the 1918 outbreak, the current avian flu strain does share many characteristics with the 1918 strain. Both scientists and governments around the world are studying this threat very closely and some have warned of the potential for another pandemic outbreak. Initial studies have shown that Tamiflu may be effective in helping to fight the effects of this flu virus if the medication is taken very early after flu symptoms appear.
  
• Oseltamivir, sold under the brand name Tamiflu, is one of several antiviral medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment and prevention of influenza. Flu shots are still the best way to prevent someone from developing the flu, but as of this writing no vaccine is available to protect humans from the avian H5N1 influenza virus. According to the CDC, development of a vaccine has begun.
